Winter Skincare: How To Maintain Your Goddess Glow

Why Does The Skin Get Dry In The Winter?

With lower humidity levels (moisture) in the winter months, the skin's moisture retention also decreases. This is because water molecules naturally move from areas of higher concentration (your skin) to areas of lower concentration ( winter air). This process happens a lot faster in the winter months because of the greater contrast in moisture levels between your skin and the winter air.

Importance Of A Hydrating Regimen

Hydration is important any time of the year but is especially crucial in the winter months for 2 main reasons:

  1. Compensation: a hydrating skin care regimen helps to compensate for the change in moisture levels in the winter air and replenishes the skin with needed moisture.

  2. Prevention: A hydrating skin care regimen is a preventative method for troubling skin conditions.

    1. Not replenishing your skin with needed moisture can lead to severe dryness and even eczema patches on the face.

    2. Not replenishing the skin with needed moisture can cause sebaceous (oil) glands in your skin to become overactive and produce excess oils as your skin tries to restore the moisture balance back to equilibrium.

Essentials For a Hydrating Skincare Regimen

Face Wash: a cleanser is necessary to remove dirt and dead dry skin. Paired with a spin brush, this deep cleaning routine reveals beautiful youthful skin. It is important to wash your face 2 times a day with a gentle cleanser and to exfoliate the skin at least once a week.

Simple Foaming Cleanser is gentile on the skin, has no harsh chemicals or fragrance. Its one of my favorites.

Moisture Mask: a moisture mask is a great way to pamper the skin while replenishing it with much needed hydration to maintain a youthful look. One of my personal favorites is the Origins Drink Up 10 Minutes Mask to Quench Skin’s Thirst; it is gentle on the skin and formulated with rich extracts and emollient qualities to boost moisture in the skin.

Moisturizer (day and Night): This is in my opinion the most important element in the regimen. A good moisturizer is vital to your skin’s health as it is meant to remain on the skin the longest. In the winter time, I personally prefer heavier moisturizers as extreme loss of hydration sometimes causes dry patches on my skin.

  1. Night Time: To combat this I switch to a more natural and traditional product for moisturizing especially at night time: African Shea Butter.

African Shea Butter, rich in Vitamin A and E, penetrates deep into the skin because of its long lasting moisturizing qualities. It also helps to regenerate cells, boost collagen and softens the skin to help reduce wrinkles .

2. Day Time: I personally use Shea butter during the daytime as well, but for those who want the benefits of a long-lasting deep-penetrating moisturizer but also the lighter feel on the skin, I recommend year-round moisturizer the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense For Very Dry to Dry Combination Skin.

Unlike the fatty quality of Shea butter, this moisturizer is gel-based, yet rich and very hydrating! Its wears lighter than Shea butter and definitely helps to repair the skin's moisture barrier.

Glycerin: Glycerin (glycerol) is a humectant; it attracts water. This quality is a powerful tool in a winter makeup regimen. It locks in moisture and maintains the skin’s water balance. This does not mean you need to pour glycerin straight onto the skin. Using everyday products high in glycerin will do the job.

  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is necessary for the protection of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. The BONUS here is that sunscreen is very high in glycerin! Banana Boat SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion has glycerin as the 3rd highest ingredient and Target’s Up and Up SPF 30 sunscreen lotion (Love this!) has glycerin as its 4th highest ingredient.

  • Primer: Essential to your daily slay, primer ensures the longevity of your makeup and acts as a great base creating a barrier between your skin and your makeup. Why? Because face primers are loaded with glycerin.
SEPHORA COLLECTION Beauty Amplifier Afterglow Primer & Luminizer is one of my favorites. I mix this into my foundation daily for a luminous glow and to help lock in moisture. It has glycerin as its 5th ingredient.
